When Aaron asked the question Jack coughed, almost choking on his own mouthful of ice cream. He set down the spoon and used the time it took for him to swallow the ice cream to think of the best way to answer the abrupt question.
"I didn't know her very well," he answered honestly. "I didn't even know that my dad had another kid until after you were born. When I first met your mother I had no idea that she was my sister." He paused, tilting his head sideways to look at Aaron. "Why do you ask?"

Aaron put down his bowl and sat up straighter. Better to look like more of an adult.
"Because the little you know about her? I know even less. I wanna know what she was like! Her, my dad, anything. Mom won't say anything, she says she'll tell me when I'm older, which I know is just a way of putting it off until I forget about it."
He took a deep breath and blew it out slowly, staring at his lap. "Were you guys friends? Could you at least tell me that much?"
