all the weird men in that pub were terribly polite....the man who kept asking very nicely if he could 'touch my hair' was too!

I think the key word is 'student'. All students regardless of gender, race, location, etc usually worry a lot less on personal hygene than they would back at home. Heck I've done my share showing up to class once in a robe and flip-flops while rinsing myself with mouthwash on a dash to the other side of campus.

You're applying to school. Don't worry you'll fall into the bandwagon too! =)
