Zuko/Iroh was what initially got me into Avatar. I mean yes there are many mentor/hero relationships but when has there ever been a mentor/villain relationship? (not one that I can think of) but as it went on I just realized it even transcended the whole mentor/hero relationships you see in other stories and really is one of my absolute favorite non-romantic relationships.
I realized that Zuko/Iroh even touches me when Zuko is just thinking of Iroh even when they are not together on screen. ♥
When I started watching "I was all he's not that great. why does he have fangirl? Bah. Anger's such an unattractive trait", and now he's one of my favourite along Toph and Iroh (and totally my Little Black Dress).
and the Zuko-Iroh relationship is entirely made of win, yes. It's so real! I'm a bit wary of (normal) family relationship in fiction because I find it too sugar-coated, they never fight, they're never embarrassed at each others. But Zuko-Iroh really clinches it.
Zuko was always my favorite since episode 3 (and I don't really consider myself a fangirl). It was the moment when Zuko asked Iroh if he really meant what he said like a kid who has never been praised before (as in Zuko has more honor than Zhao) and I knew Zuko was not your typical villain at all. :)
fangirl not meant pejoratively, I'm the fangirl of lots of characters!
I always liked Zuko's story, but I didn't like him until way into the S2. I knew he was not a typical villain by the time he actually kept his word when Aang went along with him in exchange for leaving the Water Tribe village alone. Any typical cartoon villain would have taken Aang prisoner then laugh about Aang's naivety and destroyed the village just because. (of course most typical cartoon villains are stupid which even Azula isn't for all that she's mostly evil.)
And yes, Zuko's journey was awesome. He's by no means my favourite character but... I adore him. I rolled my eyes at him for one season, started to care for him in Book 2 and loved him by the end, even if he has all the characteristics that annoy me. I'll miss this series so bad. But I'm buying it and making everyone I know watch it. XP
