I vote for volunteering and roller derby (although there is nothing wrong with kitten sweaters. You could knit them little punk rock vests).

Granted, I have no experience with job-hunting agencies, but I'd be hesitant to shell out that much money for a what-if.

I only hesitate to knit for my kitties out of the fear that I will lose a hand trying to dress them. Well, my baby boy kitty probably wouldn't care what the hell I did but Beastie would gnaw my damn face off.

Mmm. I am most hesitant about the roller derby thing. It's very much a "what if" sort of dream but I can't stop checking it out nonetheless. I think the library thing will definitely happen though...I miss books!

I don't know about the job-seeking agency thing either. I'm not as concerned about the $200 (it's a lot of money but I can afford it right now) it's just that I don't know if it'll be worth it or if there are other, better agencies in the area that I should try before making a commitment. ARGH.

I'm finally living with kitties again, and it figures one is terrified of everything and the other just wants to eat my soul :p

I had a coworker get involved in roller derby, and while she said it was lots of fun and kept showing up with amazing bruises, she also said it cost more than she planned. (Me, I just want to find a roller rink and go around in circles again :p ).

Is there a college/community center that has a career center/dept? In my experience, they tend to have a decent idea of good and bad agencies to go with or stay away from.

I adore kitties. They can be as crazy as they want and because they weigh in at ten pounds it's more endearing than awful.

I would love to find a roller rink but all the ones I ever find/go to are filled with kids that can skate better than me. Makes me feel creepy and depressed.

Unfortunately the Tri-Cities are lacking in the college department. I'll keep plugging away at the ol' internets and classifieds. It sucks but there's only so many avenues for job searching when you're in a town where no one knows you.

- Do I pay $200 to enlist the help of a job-seeking agency?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

All legitimate agencies are paid by the employer. Period.

Have you thought about going to a temp agency? I know of a lot of people who ended up in FT positions that started with temp work.

It's really that bad?

I haven't tried a temp agency -- I've never used any sort of agency before so I simply assumed it wouldn't be helpful. But if you say it's worth it I will definitely try it out.

Yep. For starters, it will get you working...which is better than not working. :-)

With Temp agencies, you work for them, not the actual company, but even though it's pricey, for a lot of companies it's like an audition. It's cheap and easy to get rid of you if they don't need you (or like you!) But if they do like you, it's an excellent way to get a foot in the door, and if they want to hire you, they pay the temp agency a fee.

*hugs you so hard*

I will definitely look into it. I appreciate the advice!

As others have said, yes, no, no. Especially the library, as you might be able to make some connections there, or at least have first dibs on the bulletin board.

Cat sweaters are never the answer.
