I like the orchid pic! How'd you choose to tint the background only?

Duplicate the background layer, set the mode to 'Color' instead of 'Normal'. Use a brush and color the background black to achieve the black-and-white effect.

As for removing flaws, use the clone/stamp tool. Works for removing things that mar the picture (like the stupid wall line).
