I don't recall Red Matter from TOS, and I was a pretty chronic geek about 10 years ago (owning over 50 books, subscribed to the magazine AND the fan magazine, etc.). However, I concede my memory might be faulty.
Every time I hear the words "red matter" during the movie, I can almost see a group of screenwriter-type people around a table. They're hashing out different plot points.
"So what are we going to call the Weapon?"
"What Weapon?"
"There's always a Weapon. Genesis, Trilithium - something that could be really good but in the wrong hands, really bad. The Weapon."
"Oh, that. I dunno, man. It's been a long day and my brain is mush. Call it The Big Red Blob for all I care at the moment."
"Nah, that won't work."
"Then call it Red Matter for now and let's go get a drink."
When my older son (now 15) was in 4th grade, he loved a series of books called Magic Tree House. Last I checked, there were almost 40 books in the series and Older Son owned nearly all of them. What was impressive was that he could tell you the title of every book in the series - in order. If you asked him the title of Magic Tree House #14, he knew. If you asked him what he learned in school that day, he didn't remember.
