I think a reason that Ying Ru doesn't grow stronger is because she doesn't want to. She likes this situation, and despite her brief unhappiness from Xiao Wu's comments, it's brief and she's content. She's having fun and enjoying life, and she's not dead. Her character also doesn't seem like the type to become xian. Those are generally determined, somewhat cold, and unworldly. I just realized that xians are a lot like monks. Hao Yang sounds like the childhood friend character that has loved the main character longer, but confessed too late.

I have this terrible feeling that something bad will happen. Like the next time she goes to Zhu Cheng, when she returns she'll find her Master dead and Hao Yang and Xiao Wu disappeared.

haha yeah, Ying Ru doesn't have the right mindset to be cultivating, does she? & people will definitely be dying in this story, just can't say when and who just yet (or ever for that matter... haha!)
