i do not think people only care for themselves.
if a human tends to be at a life or death circumstance, naturally it will care only about itself. hell, if a human is uncomfortable, it will care only about itself. humans will actually care for themselves first, and if they have the time & ambition to care, they will care for others. and i don't think that is selfish. it's important to care about yourself, because you're right, you can't rely on others, but then again, don't be surprised when someone holds your hand as you cross the street. i know that i've cared for you. no doubt about it. i don't know what you consider "caring"; maybe i won't dodge in front of a bullet for you, but there is plenty that i would do.
