I heard many of the new songs on Fill-in-the-Blank last Monday night and feel exactly the same way you do.
Having been a listener or AL for over 25 years and knowing the fan base AL is trying to reach, I feel like his music is no longer designed to me or any other longtime dementia music fan.
I understand why he is doing it that way. He is trying to sell as many CDs as possible to the younger fan while hoping that either out of loyalty or appreciation, long time fans still purchase the album.
I've heard the album. The good news is that you definitely haven't heard the best parts yet. The bad news is that there's a lot of filler and eye-rolling rehashery (i.e. jokes and topics that have already been covered elsewhere...in some cases a good 10-20 years previously.) Some stuff definitely made me laugh, but there's nothing groundbreaking here. Steve sings along to the chorus of one of the style parodies, which actually makes me laugh quite a bit more. :)
I didn't find "White & Nerdy" particularly clever. Fast, yes, but just the same standard "white geeky guy who wants to be a gangsta" thing with head-scratchingly random nerd-shots.
Hmm, I like all those songs. Of course "You're Pitiful" won't be on the album, so there are only two songs the will be on the cd that you've heard that you don't like. I don't agree with you, but that's why Al's fanbase is so great. We all have different songs we like and don't like. I love White and Nerdy. You can read the lyrics on Al's myspace. You're not a bad fangirl, Moonbeam. I'm sure there will be something left on the cd that you'll like. *hugs*
I haven't heard White & Nerdy, but I was underwhelmed with DDTS, especially the video. I like Pitiful, but that's partly because I think the original is such an overplayed piece of schlock. I'm looking forward to hearing his album, so we'll see. He usually surprises me with some great stuck-in-my-head song, like Hardware Store.
