Hey it just occurred to me that since you're a medical professional, I can ask you a question for my book. :p
Okay, so in my story I'm working on, my MC is a severe asthmatic and his house goes up in flames. He's the only survivor since his sister wasn't home at the time. I had been considering that he jumped to save himself, but now think he was probably having a pretty horrible asthma attack and was rescued by firefighters instead and I was wondering what they would do to treat that, and how long of a hospital stay would be necessary/adequate before they'd let him go.
I am not really too involved in asthma treatment as we don't handle the respiratory end of the spectrum. I would assume that the exertion of escaping a fire would cause the attack as activity is what causes the constriction. Once rescuers find the patient, immediately he is probably given an oxygen mask. I don't know if paramedics can give any form of medication but I think that someone in the emergency care area would administer something to open his airways. We've had folks come through our ER and stay a few hours. Rarely are they admitted.
