Ancient comics edition

I've been catching up with the Lucifer TV show over the last few weeks, and having caught up, I was inspired to go read the comic series it's very loosely based on. I read the Lucifer bits in Sandman back when it first came out, but I never read the Mike Carey-written series which came out some years afterwards. There may be some general spoilers ( Read more... )

This is (going by my memory) a very accurate compare and contrast. I loved the comic book but it definitely was no female friendly by anyone's standards (but much of DC/Vertigo was like that including some of Gaiman's earliest bits but he wasn't as bad as the rest of them).

The TV Lucifer is much more fun and a much more sympathetic devil. I was happy though at Halloween they did use Mazikeen's actual looks.

I would like to reread Lucifer but all of mine are back home in a storage locker.

Gaiman is not always very good at writing female characters, but the impression I get from his writing is more like he just kind of flails and doesn't know what to do with them rather than that he's got that icky Frank "WhoresWhoresWhores" Miller thing going on. (If anything the opposite; his female characters tend to be pretty sexless. But then, to be fair, so do a lot of his male characters.)

that seems like a fair assessment of Gaiman's females. Don't get me started on Miller.

Yeah, in the long run, the comic might be more imaginative and all that, but for me personally, I couldn't keep reading it, because I just couldn't stand the main character ( ... )

I don't remember the comic being like that, but then it's been 20 years and I think I would notice something like that now.

Man, I love Lucifer the TV show.

One of the things I really love, especially about season 2, is that the writers clearly have a policy to switch up (in a fairly organic way) scene partners; there's no ongoing separation of storylines, so we get a rounded view of everyone. (Dan is a great example of a character who's grown through exploring his relationships with Lucifer, Maze, Mom, and even Ella.)

And also I love DB Woodside as Amenadiel. Who'd have thought it, after I loathed his Principal Wood so much... :)

I think the difference is the writing. By s7, Joss had pretty much lost interest in most of Buffy. I figure he gave a basic idea for them to write in a 'mysterious character', but the writers never bothered to actually give Wood much of a personality beyond that. Then suddenly he was Nikki Wood's son, pitting him against Spike, pretty much one of the most beloved chars on the show, without actually letting us get to know Wood as a person first. And then to make matter worse, after that was over, it was like once again, they had no idea what to do with him, other than to have him stand around, or just pair him up with Faith, with little to no build up, just cause.

There are very few actors able to save a role like that.

I haven't read the comics, but I really love the show. Maze and Lucifer are awesome characters.
