We saw Doctor Strange last night, and I'm... ambivalent. I wanted to like it, because Doctor Strange was one of the first (and the only Marvel) comic I collected regularly, back in the day, and I loved it, cheesy alliterative spells and all. I started reading it during the Steve Englehart renaissance of the 80s, and picked up the classic Ditko ( Read more... )

I enjoyed it but I agree with many of your comments. It didn't make me want to watch it again which most of the other Marvel films have done.

Uh huh. And it is too bad, because I care more about this character than any of the more popular ones. Oh, well, such is life!

Hmmm Everyone I've seen comment on it has been knocked out. Perhaps, because you have a much longer relationship with the characters, so have different perspective from those of us who might be coming in going "Doctor Who?" I plan to see it, anyway, and see what all the fuss is about

Yeah, I'm sure it would play just fine to people who don't know the character -- and even to a lot of people who do. And they pretty much had to make major changes to the original characters, since two of the four regulars were cringeworthy Orientalist stereotypes in the original series. I just have a very particular version of the main character in my head, and alas, no one consulted me!

As a person who didn't have that weight of knowledge (as in, I knew nothing going in), I loved it -- but I'm also pretty much a 'batch girl, and I really liked what he did with the role.

Oh, yeah, he was fine -- just not MY Doctor Strange. Ah well.

I send sympathies, because yes, that's profoundly annoying for you.

Hubs birthday gift to me was an outing to see this movie, with all three kids, at a date to be determined. None of us have ever read this comic, so well go in unhampered by canonical expectations. Glad to hear the visuals are good.

Honestly, you'll probably enjoy it. I'm just cranky because it doesn't fit the Perfect Movie in my head. *g*

Gee, I loved it. And my love of Dr. Strange pre-dates the movie by decades (courtesy of my brother). I thought Cumberbatch nailed it -- it's not that easy to make waving your hands around look serious, and he did it. And yes, the whitewashing of the Ancient One is an undeniable problem, although Tilda Swinton was remarkable in a role that could have been very dull. I thought it did capture the feel of the comic, and the special effects were extraordinary, particularly because they were so integral to the plot as well as the mood.

It actually exceeded my expectations. I'm sorry it was disappointing ting for you!
