Compared to me, Eleanor Rigby's life is a gay mad whirl

The estate sale people came over yesterday and looked at everything, and opined that I would be better off going to an auction house, for various reasons (she'll get many more buyers for some of her specialized collections, etc.) and would ultimately realize more profit that way. They gave me the addresses for two of them, as well as a guy who ( Read more... )

You are such a trooper! I hope everything gets worked out with the sales soon.

I'm sorry there's another round of calls to make, but you're getting there, even if it doesn't always feel like it.

Ugh to the calls, but yay to them thinking more money would come from auctions.

Bo might have a yeast infection. Sometimes they don't smell funny for a while.

I have virtually no sense of smell, so I couldn't tell anyway. :P If he keeps doing it, I will call the vet.

It generally looks brighter pink in the canal, too. Which is hard to tell in Schnauzers, since they all grow hair in their ears like little old men.

Hmm. I didn't notice any pinkness, but the skin of his inner ears is pretty dark, so it might not have shown even if it's there.

No guilt! Mom has a phone, she can call you. Let her settle in with her new homies. Trust me.

Funny, we went to two auction houses last weekend that had "estate" auctions. The nicer one (the other was awful and not a little creepy) had a whole houseful of stuff broken into lots. The stuff looked remarkably like what was in my mom's house. We saw a rusted out metal bench set that I wanted to bid on. That sucker went for $70! I think they made good $$$. The commissions were kinda steep (up to 35%) and there were different commissions for coin/jewelry/other. But still....they do all the work! I thought of you when we were there.

Yeah, commissions of 30-35% seem to be the going rate for all that sort of thing, but I am totally willing to pay it if it gets the stuff out of there and sold.

It's nice the estate people told you you could get better prices elsewhere, but OTOH, I kind of thought that was what estate people DID. At least, that's what the one I had a lengthy conversation with at an antique shop did. Pay a flat fee of so many thousand dollars for the contents of the house and then resell at a profit where they know they can get the most money, etc. But he actually bought estates outright, and there was no commission or anything.

Yeah, these guys don't buy outright. They come into your house, price everything, and hold a big yard sale, basically. But they said that the stuff of Mom's that is worth the most is not great yard sale fodder, because it's pretty specialized. An auction house would be able to advertise it far more effectively than they could.
