Yeah, agreed.

I'm definitely planning on participating in Season Spuffy this season. However, I'm gonna have to limit that participation to reading and (hopefully) commenting. Recovering from the medical issues, moving out, getting a job...I can't at all ensure that I'll be able to write something for it this fall.

But the move to DW? Not a big deal for me. They have an RSS feed set up. I can access everything from my LJ. The barrier to entry is pretty low on this.

Yeah, real life definitely takes precedence, alas. The one thing I regret about moving from my Slacker Job to a Real Job is that it was a hell of a lot easier to write fanfic back then. :P

the more likely outcome is that the mods throw up their hands in disgust and the contributors get discouraged, and then there's no ficathon anywhere

THIS! This is my worry. I'm still smarting from the no-warning deletion of seasonal_sd, a Spike/Dru comm. (I so would have taken over mod-ship, had I known the mod was leaving. My god - the posts! *sob ( ... )

Oh, yeah, survivor of the "I'm sick of fandom so I'm deleting BAPS" fiasco here. (MOI STILL BITTER? WHY YES!) I feel your pain.

and also know that if it were put up to a public vote, it would never happen.

Yeah, this, as I commented in your previous post. I do think there could have been a better explanation (or any explanation) in the announcement post of why the community was moving.

I'm only on the fringes of Spuffy fandom these days. I'm an occasional reader (and an occasional trying to finish my WIPer), so none of this really affects me. I'm fully willing and able to click a link or sign up for an RSS feed. But I know a lot of people aren't willing to go that extra step, especially if, as you say, they're kind of on the fence anyway.

As they say, change is difficult. ;-)

Yep. And I'm kinda, yeah, things could have been handled more tactfully for my money, but dropping out would be cutting off my nose to spite my face.

You make many good points. As someone else said, this is true of volunteer projects out there in the rest of the world too.

That said, I get why you'd want to have things accessible in both places. After the attacks, I updated my DW account because it dawned on me that most of recipe files are now on LJ and if my account vanished so would most of my good pasta recipes.

I'd miss the Spuffy as much as I'd miss my friend's recipe for pasta with raw tomatoes.

Spuffy, like tomatoes, is a necessity. (That sounds like an icon. :D )
