That's not something the local feral cats would nom on, is it? Right now we're using this wussy environmentally sound, pet-friendly spray. Unfortunately it seems to be fairly ant-friendly as well. :P
Hmmm, I didn't consider that. The feral cats would like to nom on it since it's sweet. I think that The Exterminators on A&E have used a spray that disintegrates the exoskeleton on insects (particularly cockroaches) using diatomaceous earth. It's a natural killer, but I don't know how it would affect feral cats.
Years ago I had very good luck with those little flat round ant-trap things. (Years before that I also had good luck with Buford, our bulldog. I'd point out an ant to him, and in his quest to check it out, he'd inhale it. End of ant.)
Last year, ant traps worked like a charm. This year, they laugh at traps. I don't know if these are different ants, or if the traps aren't as good, or if in one season they built up resistance, or what... :stomps them:
Actually, the stomping is more effective than you would expect. In my experience, ants avoid areas where large number of ants have been squished before them.
I used to have ants coming in over a window sill. I squished many ants along the sill and on the floor near the sill, and pretty soon they stopped coming in.
Maybe it was a coincidence, but I suspect that their sense of smell tells them "this area is DANGEROUS!"
This is one of those situations where AskMeFi comes in terribly handy.
plz take photos if you attempt this. otherwise i will be forced to watch the news for weeks hoping to catch a glimpse of the glorious story "ENRAGED LOCAL RESIDENT TAKES HOMEMADE FLAMETHROWER TO INVADING VERMIN. DETAILS AT 11."
OKAY! Stick their tiny crushed ant carcasses up on wee tiny spikes outside the castle walls of your house, down on ant-eye level. Surely this will deter further ant intrusion! (ok prolly not.)

I don't know if it'll work, though, because in my opinion ants could survive a nuclear inferno.
