It's been going around the net recently that Vladimir Putin has accumulated a fortune valued at $40 billion. I think the Guardian first covered it, and the story can be found hereSo I've been wondering what I'd do with $40 billion

Buy a house for my parents and my sister. Buy all 3 cars of their own. Insurance would be their problem.
Give my mother enough money that she could divorce my father. Give my father enough money that he can afford to eat out every day. Send him on his dream trip to tour the WW2 Concentration Camps (no really, it's a dream of his).
Get Mike Holmes to design my house that will have an uber geeky games room. Go into the Games Workshop store and buy everything for all the armies I and the BF would ever want to build.
Set up more housing and fund homeless shelters. Allow those who have been using them a long time to work there.
Go into work and buy all the books I want in stock and then quit.
Go on a trip to Egypt and Greece and Italy. Go to Australia and Japan. Futz around Great Britain.
Probably give lots of money to various causes - NHS, spaceflight, renewable energy, Near-Earth Object warning systems - but making sure to keep a comfortable forty million for myself.
What do I do with that? Absolutely nothing! I don't have to do _anything_ anymore, I can sleep in and watch TV and not work ever! Every time I think about my University course dissertation, that sounds like a paradise.
First off I would pay off all my bills. Give some to various family members and invest some in various places for the future. Then get a house. Then I'll travel for a bit and just let my brother live in the house until I get back.

Second, I'd pay off the mortgages/debts of everyone in the family.
Third, I'd buy a life annuity so I would have a guaranteed income.
Fourth, I would buy a nice place near the beach. Sunshine Coast?
Fifth, mum would get that cruise ship holiday she's always wanted.
Sixth, donate a portion to worthy charities.
Seventh, build doomsday machine and hold world for ransom! MWA-HA-HA!!!
