...actually I own the first 3... haven't got around to picking up the 4th (Highlander : Endgame) with both Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul) and Conner MacLeod (Christopher Lambert).
Well just keep in mind that it came out in mid 80s, and back then it was considered decent. You know, like hair metal, and poorly animated kids shows. We're all guilty of loving something fucking horrible from back then :P
I guess it's like watching the Friday the 13th movies. They all suck ass, but back when they first came out, they were actually scary to some people. Watching them now though, everything looks so fake it's retardedly silly.
Seriously though it had nothing to do with effects or technology it was the weak story and poor character interaction that got to me. That and insanely pointless camera angles.

I think I can agree with you that the dialogue is not the best and it's true that there is a lot of story being compacted into it.
I just love the concept/story.
