I was an armed guard in Iraq. We manned the gates, manned sentry towers, provided over watch for us patrols leaving/entering the base, searched the Iraqi workers who came on base, ect. ect.

Children would pelt us with rocks all the time. Did we shoot them? No.

My question is, was the actions of the children truly some thing that warranted lethal force? Highly doubtful, but on the small chance that the children were throwing rocks large enough to kill a boarder patrol officer if struck in the head - why aren't the boarder patrol agents wearing the proper safety gear?

Judging by some of the pics in related articles, the guards were all wearing helmets and body armor. The boys were throwing moderately sized gravel, like the kind you'd find in country driveways.

It's horrible guards/armed forces like this that give the many good members such horrible reps :(

A group of teenagers are not "children" in the sense you imply, nor are the Border Patrol officers wearing combat armor.

Next week we plan on taking a page from Israel and defending ourselves from the stone-throwers with rockets.

OK, maybe the patrol officer shouldn't have fired, BUT -

What kind of idiot parents lets their kids go out and throw rocks at armed guards? At 14 you'd think he'd have more common sense than that. That's about as bright as spitting on a cop at a traffic stop.

I dunno, at 14 I don't think it would have even entered into my head that anyone would be shooting at me for ANYTHING stupid I did

I made the mistake of reading the comments on the yahoo post of this.

I've never wanted to punch so many people so badly all at the same time.

People would not shut up about "They were throwing rocks! That's what you get!" "HA, we're AMERICA. You mess with the bull, you get the horns!" "The guard was defending himself! He was attacked!"

What. The crap. People.

Throwing rocks at armed guards. Yeah, sitting at a desk, being a reasonable adult, it seems nothing but stupid. Fourteen year old boy. They live for stupid, authority-defying stunts.

So full of rage.

Thing is, none of the people who say things like that (or at least very few) have the balls to even hint that they feel that way outside the sort-of anonymity the internet grants you. It's G.I.F.T. at its worst.

How dare those border guards defend themselves? Didn't they know that people have the right to pelt them with rocks whenever they like, and the border guards have to just take it?

I'm not sure why they lost their human right of self-defense, but you seem to believe that they did, so I'm agreeing with you. Happy?

The right of self-defense is actually based on the response being proportionate to the attack. This wasn't.
