What a wonderful fic! John was certainly a neglectful father (based upon the show, though it is somewhat understandable given the circumstances), it's not hard to imagine his neglect veering over into abuse. I love how Dean ALMOST made the connection between Sam's growth spurt and the beatings by John stopping. My interpretation - John stopped beating Dean because Sam likely physically threatened John with harm (now that he was big enough) John to stop the beating. Or perhaps not by physical intimidation, but by distracting John enough to refocus his rage in arguments with Sam. I can so see Dean taking the brunt of John's anger and frustration in enduring beatings (protecting Sam from the beatings)when Sam was younger ( ... )

Here's my take on John: He was certainly emotionally abusive and he doesn't seem like a "spare the rod" kind of guy, though whether he veered into physical abuse is an open question. I don't think he was as abusive as in this fic but that it is possible.

Anywho, glad u liked it!
