I took Gregory to the Secret Playground yesterday and was set upon by Mormons.  They were asking me why I wasn't interested in reading The Book of Mormon.  I said, "Listen guys, my family have been Catholic since St. Patrick came over to Ireland, and I'm not about to change that now ( Read more... )

Hahaha! Poor Mormons. We're plagued by Jehovah's Witnesses. They come at least weekly, and there was a set at the old apartment that knew us by name. They seem to specialize in Russians and leave me their stuff in English and Russian. Doesn't matter to the recycling bin. Once a couple came to my parents' house and I talked to them. They said, "Do you believe this Bible passage?" I said yes. "Do you read the Bible?" Yes. "Oh...um...well...um...it was nice to talk to you!"

We used to get the JWs in Baltimore, but it seems like out here, its Mormon Country. These are the second pair of missionaries I've talked to, always when I'm out and about.

Hahahaha, that's awesome! Their religion has only been around for like 160 years, so he should realize that having family from the beginning isn't that impressive lol.

IMHO, if your religion requires you to convert strangers in order to succeed, it's not going to succeed. (Nothing wrong against people coming to a religion in a myriad of ways, including research and investigation, free will, and befriending someone of that religion and finding more about it through a friend you've known already. But asking strangers to accept your religion is IMHO one step removed from the Crusades. (Although I can't single out the entire Mormon and JW faiths, as I have friends in both camps (well, relatives in the latter) that don't talk about their religion all the time, don't convert me, and are quite happy to answer any and all questions I have (which are several, as I'm just a naturally curious person at heart)

I don't mind people evangelizing so long as they're actually spreading the Good News and not standing on the corner telling passersby that they're going to hell like one group did at my college. I know for some people their religion tells them to Visit-The-Infidel-With-Explanatory-Pamphlets, and I don't mind engaging with them. And maybe they'll discover that Catholics read he Bible too.

I took Gregory to the Secret Playground

Is that anywhere near the secret garden?

I think I've seen Mormon missionaries a grand total of once here in Chicago. Usually I'm accosted by an elderly JW at Dunkin Donuts who hands out Watchtowers from her car...

We call it the Secret Playground because it is very close to our house, but its on a path so we didn't know about it until our neighbors told us about it. Later, we discovered The Even Secreter Playground.
