Oh gawd, I know what you mean about pastels! I love the bright colours and the almost painterly quality you can get from them but UHHHHGGG they are too messy!
Crayons are the less messy (but more frustrating, in terms of blending) alternative. Although, I have to scrape the little wax bits off my scanner window every once in awhile. >:l

Gotta say, I love what you did with the colors in "Vet and the Rookie"--starting with yellows, then finishing with that reddish layer just REALLY adds a ton of life to it. KEEP DOING DAT
