Part Three
I scrambled on to my bed and wormed my way in between the two of them. I slipped my hands into one of Daddy Ian’s and one of Papa Anty’s. I looked from one to the other. Something told me this was not the time to say anything. That I just needed to sit still and listen to what they had to tell me.
“Laila, I need you to understand something.” I had never seen Daddy Ian looking so serious.
“This story ends with us. Here, right now being happy is all that me and Papa have ever wanted. Okay?”
I nodded.
Papa Anty began to speak. “Now we’re telling you this because there are some sad parts to our story. If you ever feel sad while listening to it please tell us, but more importantly remember that it ends with a beautiful little girl who has two fathers who love her more than anything in the world.”
They looked at each other as if they were unsure as how to start. Daddy Ian opened and closed his mouth a few times. He looked my goldfish after he had jumped out of his bowl. I suppressed the urge to giggle, but the corner of my mouth did turn up a little. Neither one noticed though.
Finally after what seemed like forever and even more forever, Papa Anty began to talk.
“Well, we met each other in 6th grade when we were assigned do to a project together. Then neither one of us identified as being gay at the time.”
“In fact, both of us soon started to date girls.”
I wrinkled my nose at this. I was weird to think that my fathers had dated anyone else, but to think of them with girls was just weird. I had always thought of them always being in love, and always being my fathers.
“We even loved a few of them. You know Aunty Melanie?”
I nodded. I love Melanie. She wasn’t really my aunt, but she was at all of my birthday parties and all our family events. She was a big part of my life.
“That is my ex-girlfriend.”
My eyes grew wide and my mouth popped open. I never in a million billion gazillion years would have ever, ever put Daddy Ian and Melanie in a couple together. I pressed my brows together.
“I know little bird; I like Daddy Ian being with me much more too.”
This was all really interesting for me. But it wasn’t exactly what I wanted to know. Why had their love story been sad?
“But why is it sad? Didn’t you just wake up one morning and know that you were in love?”
They both looked at me with sad smiles on their faces.
“I hate to ruin your innocence,” Daddy Ian began.
“But the world seldom works like that.” Papa finished.
“Sometimes it takes months even years to know that you love someone.”
By this point both Daddy and Papa had dropped my hands. Daddy reached over and took Papa’s into his own. They looked into each other’s eyes for a moment. I looked down. I felt that this was something that I wasn’t supposed to see.
“Is that what happened with you?”
“Yes, Lai. Papa and I worked and lived side by side for years until one day we just snapped.”
“There were a lot of unsaid things between us. Emotions that neither one of us were willing to admit to. Not to ourselves and definitely not each other.”
I couldn’t understand this. If you loved someone you loved them.
“Why wouldn’t you tell each other?”
Papa signed and ran a hand through his hair.
“You know how people tease you for just being our daughter?”
“Yes. Those people are blue meanies.”
Daddy Ian chuckled. “Yes very blue meanies indeed. But just imagine how much more we got teased because we love each other.”
I sat very still and my eyes fell on my on their hands. I had come home crying a few times from school because of people teasing, but I couldn’t imagine people making fun of me for who I loved.
“It took us a long time to come to terms with whom and what we are.”
“I even left at one point.”
My head snapped up and I looked into Papa’s eyes.
“You left Daddy Ian?” There was no blame in my voice, only confusion. Papa loved Daddy more than anything.
“I did leave. I left because I was scared. It was the worst few months of my life. I left everything I loved behind because people had told me to love another man was wrong. It was these few months that made me realize how much I truly love Ian and everything that we have built together.”
Papa Anty put his arm around me.
“But don’t you ever think for a moment that I am going anywhere without the most important people in my life.”
I threw my arms around his neck and held him close.
“I know.”
Daddy Ian wrapped his arms around the two of us. It was nice and warm like a toasty sandwich. Soon though, I pushed us all apart. As much as I loved my fathers it was too hot between them.
“Is there anything else you want to know?”
I paused. I knew that there was more that they weren’t telling me, but I realized that I didn’t need to know how they met and fell in love. Only that they did and that they love me very much.
“Can I have ice cream?”
They laughed at my sudden change.
“Yes little bird, but only if you eat all your veggies!” Daddy Ian said and then both he and Papa Anty started to tickle me. While I was trying to survive the tickle attack I realized something. I have the best fathers in the entire world.
