Part Eight
You.
The word reverberated around Ian’s head and seemed to echo throughout the room. He had simultaneous urges to run into Anthony’s arms and at the same time run as far away as he could. He was frozen to the spot.
“Ian?” Anthony was looking at his friend. There was a look of shame on his face.
Ian started to sputter.
“You, me, us, love?”
Ian couldn’t wrap his head around this concept. Him and Anthony together. He was shocked. He never thought that Anthony would just admit that he loved Ian. Beneath all of the confusion that Ian felt there was a small bubble of happiness growing. Anthony loved him. Ian felt the corner of his mouth lifted into a half smile.
Anthony loves me.
Ian no longer wanted to run away from Anthony. He wanted to hold him against his body and never let him go.
“Why did you never tell me? I always thought that you wanted girls. I mean you were always bringing them home and…” Ian’s voice trailed off.
Anthony was wringing his hands.
“I never wanted to make you uncomfortable.” He walked over to the table and sat down. He ran his fingers through his hair.
“I didn’t want to lose you. I would rather have you just as a friend than nothing at all.”
“But you could have told me that you were gay without saying that you have feelings for me.” Ian moved and sat down at the table across from Anthony. Anthony looked so dejected. Ian couldn’t imagine living with the secret. The pain that he must have unintentionally caused Anthony over the years made Ian feel so guilty.
“Yeah, but that was such a slippery slope. First I tell you I’m gay and then suddenly I am confessing my love for you. I never intended to tell you.”
Ian looked and saw that Anthony’s hand was lying on the table. In a moment of clarity, bravery, or maybe stupidity, Ian reached out and took his hand. He turned it over in his hand and began to trace the lines in his palm.
“Ian? What are you doing?” There was hope in Anthony’s voice, but caution.
“Shut up and just let me do this.”
Ian’s hand started to shake. He honestly had no idea what he was doing. Why on earth was he playing with his best friend’s hand? Why was he treating Anthony as a lover? He brought Anthony’s hand to his palm and kissed the inside of his wrist. It was a light kiss, but he heard Anthony let out a light sigh. Ian looked into Anthony’s eyes. There was something in them that he had never seen before. Before he even had time to register it, Anthony had pulled Ian into a kiss.
