Well, I'll leave the specific neighborhood recs to contentlove and others who've lived there more recently than I -- but I think it'd be a great move for you.
a) Close enough to SA so that you can get back easily for outstanding legal/personal issues, but b) New scenery without memories, which is going to help with healing, and c) generally, Austin's probably more in line with you, philosophically and culturally, than is SA.
Bouldin Creek Somewhere around North Loop (don't know the hood name) Rosedale East Austin (I don't know the hoods as well) Travis Heights (if you can find something affordable) Oh and behind Flipnotics off Barton Springs - don't know the name of the hood but I am sure someone will fill you in on that bit easily - but like Travis Heights you'll have to look for "affordable")
Those would be on my list. I might rent something in the area you are thinking of for (6 months or so) as you get used to Austin. Wish I had done that when I moved here years ago.

This area is called Barton Hills and is my first choice. I LOVE Barton Hills. It's where Chris and I want to buy.
Travis Heights is nice. I think Hyde Park is overrated. (I think that's the area around North Loop you're referring to.)
There are also some nice neighborhoods in the Far West area is you're okay with Northish Austin.
San Antonio breaks my heart. Everything here is a memory. And for a big city, it's a small set of interlocking communities. At least the ones I run in. I think, if I want to find clear space in which to heal, and to start whatever the next part of my life is going to look like, I need to be someplace that won't be so rife with nostalgia
( ... )
I will now do the interpretive dance of tempting you both to the Chicagoland area.
*insert seductive dance of tempting*
Ok, now that that's done...First, Laurie, I'm catching up on LJ/internet after my move, and I'm really sorry to hear about what you've been going through.
And I know Austin's probably a better bet for you on the scale of "least jarring move possible" but I thought I'd give it a shot :D
And truthfully, winter's not so bad, even for a lizard like me.
I wish you the best in fining a place that works for you. No good advice on Austin, heh...but at some point I'm sure I'll be down that way to visit.
Could I live anywhere? I'd like a place in the east part of clarksville, walking distance to lamar between 6th and enfield.
Other ridiculously expensive places I would like to live: Bouldin Creek, Barton Hills, Travis Heights, Hyde Park, West Campus, or possibly one of the downtown condos.
Places that might be remotely affordable: burnet area; crestview, brentwood, someplace in east austin; chestnut or rosewood, south 1st ish; galindo or dawson (though those are probably too 'spensive).
