If you're a foreigner, you can get away with so much in spoken language. No one expects any foreigner to be able to say "By tomorrow, I will have had to have completed the first to chapters of the book."

All the grammar in the world doesn't mean a thing when you can't hear them say "Do you want chopsticks with that?" You can't ask where the umbrellas are sold if you forget how to say 'umbrella.' :(
