Know What I Hate?

People.

I'm not sure which is more disgusting--this guy's racism, or his total inability to recognize or acknowledge it as such.

I mean, come on! He has, like, a zillion black friends! He lets them use his bathroom! He only refuses to perform interracial marriages out of concern for the poor widdle children! And he tries to treat everyone equally-- ( Read more... )

Oh yes, haven't you heard? Biracial children have hard lives that destine them for failure -- they couldn't possibly get into Harvard Law School or become bestselling authors or award-winning actors or, y'know, become President or anything.

What sends it into the territory of the surreal, for me, is that this incident was not the first time this month I had heard of people spewing anti-miscegenation rhetoric and claiming it wasn't actually racism (the first was an argument that a friend of mine got into). At first I thought it was a fluke but now I'm pretty sure we've got some kind of disruption of the space-time continuum launching random bits of the 1950s here into present-day society.

This guys still lives in a world where letting a black person using your bathroom is considered as an extremely progressive behavior...

I uh, have to say as a mixed child, there were some hard ships growing up. Of course that was 20 years ago and frankly I think they were more concerned that I was a democrat, and an atheist.

I hope that the couple in question does take it to a higher court and this guy get lambasted from the court system. There is no way that he is impartial and treats everyone fairly if he has pre-judged that mulatto children aren't worth having. Maybe he is just upset we get strengths from both parents and don't get sunburned super easily.

At least some people are now taking action against him.

I saw this and what ran through my head was "c'mon it's 2009." It's another version of the classic "I'm not racist, but..." Going to high school where I did, I heard this argument a lot - that their children would suffer - but it was always someone that was just racist and didn't want to openly admit they simply had a problem with a mixed race couple.

This has been making the rounds of civil liberties and law blogs for a few days. I've consistently argued that the only explanation must be that this guy is contemplating a run for elected office. Any judge with two functioning brain cells must know that, ever since Loving v. Virginia, the Federal courts will smack this shit down faster than a tweaker playing whack-a-mole. It has to be a publicity stunt. What's sad is the notion that there might be a majority of voters down there who would be impressed by it.
