Movie Review: Stardust

Camped with the Oliver Road Crew over the weekend at the International Camel Races in Virginia City, NV - we did a little bit of DVD trading.

We loaned Pam and David the underwhelming sequel-to-a-classic 2010, and they gave us the 2007 fantasy film Stardust to watch for our evening entertainment ( Read more... )

I am launching an official protest. Based on your past criteria for movies and ratings, and your extra glowy post-Stardust response, this movie deserves a solid 5 star rating!

I am the "movie asshole". You can show me a movie that you think is great, and that lots of people think is great, and I'll just sit through it and go "feh". Frequently, it's because I'm far more sensitive to editing choices and aspects of art direction than a lot of people.

That said, I loved Stardust. It's easily one of the best things I've seen in the last year. It's been a good year for escapist movies ("art" movies...not so much), and this one was a stand out great one. It really shows Gaiman at the top of his game and it's full of interesting little allusions.

De Niro stole the screen every time he was on it. That's what he does. I'd love to see him in more roles like Captain Shakespeare. He really comes out well when you make him a tough guy and then round it out with something effeminate.

Possibly my favorite thing of the whole movie, however, was how the star-girl began to radiate light whenever she felt love. It's actually very reminiscent of Howl's Moving Castle, as a protagonist in it is a young woman cursed to ( ... )

You should read the book (the novel, not the graphic novel) too. There are some very different elements. I liked them both. When I first saw the movie I was dissapointed in the things they changed. Then I read an interview with Gaiman and I "got it". Both good. One of my favorite recent movies.
