i have a loose theory that anything we consume but don't pay for outright is ultimately just some form of entertainment, with all the reality warping and marketing that comes with it.

This is like a man with a 50 room mansion complaining his life is ruined because someone built a 60 room mansion in the same town. Is there a single thing you could do on the Internet in 1997 that is now impossible? Nope, a million additional things but nothing has been subtracted. If you don't want any of those million additional things then don't click on them.
There are plenty of websites which offer free information and entertainment with no commercial content. E.g. math guides, electrical circuit tutorials. Probably 1000x more than in 1997. It is just that they are outnumbered by sites with some sort of advertising.
