I remember reading about the issuing of fatwas and the formation of "Death Squads" back in 2005.

This article is kind of misleading though. It's not like gays were or could be open before the invasion; there was no corollary to "Boystown" or "Andersonville". In fact is they were often times killed or imprisoned during/under Husein's rule. The "fatwas" that were issued (even though they have since been rescinded) by clerics of one religious faction of the populations is not surprising. There is no longer a strong central government (and mind you, I'm not suggesting another dictatorship be installed) but with no one central power that has a focus on a less than fundamental interpretation of the Qur'an this kind of thing will continue.

Totally off topic, but I noticed that you're a Drosophila researcher. Who's lab are you in? (I'm at UBC, in Vancouver BC, by the way. Study Drosophila telomeres and longevity. I'm actually surprised that we don't have a livejournal community.)

Interestingly enough, at one point I saw that Jerry Rubin, the guy who was in charge of the Berkely Drosophila Genome Project had a livejournal. But he never posted in it, and eventually deleted it. I couldn't believe it. He would have been the ideal person to start a community.

Are you a member of all the other, pseudo-related communities, like the molecular biology community etc?

wow, he should have started one..

actually, i did a search for drosophila community right after i read your comment. i found the entomology one, so i signed up for that to watch for a bit. i'll see how that goes.

are there any you recommend?
