Because yet again Northern Ireland has made the national news by being so backwards, so 1940's (1840's?) that it's actually painful. List of stereotypes we managed to live up to with this latest one:

- We are all ignorant, provincial, parochial farmers.
- DUP (our largest party) is entirely made up of evangelical Christians who would fit in nicely with the US Tea Party
- Attempt to bring business opportunity to NI is stymied by outdated laws and bizarre moral values. Did you hear about the MTV Awards event that's happening here? There's supposed to be a huge after-party, except, being Sunday, it's fallen foul of our super-strict licensing laws. They're still arguing about that one.
- Time warp. Elected officials and public figures still manage to come out with statements/opinions that would get them laughed out of office - or made to resign - anywhere else in the UK.

Sigh. There's a depressing amount of truth to most NI stereotypes, but I wish, just once, we could distinguish ourselves for achievement instead of idiocy.

Okay, the rest of it, I have no idea about.

But that guy, that one guy who said no... He has every right to. It's his field, his land, his right. And I have no disagreement with what he did. It may be old fashioned, but that is his right. He owns the land and has that right. People fought for centuries to give him that right.

The rest of it, I can't speak to.

Of course it was his right. But that doesn't make what he did any less embarrassing.
