I haven't watched it and yet and TBH, I'm probably just gonna give up at this point. They're trying so hard to forget everything pre-S6 and now everything is just getting weird. :|
People are saying the episode was good, but I'm tired of getting my hopes up for this show. :
Also, re: Plot Hole, even if they hadn't officially met yet, the angels would still have known who Dean was. After all, Gabe himself said that since the beginning of time, the angels knew it would come down to Sam and Dean.
I don't know. I don't think it is too far fetched that Dean simply didn't think of it. Just imagine you are in a mind set where all your angelic friends and allies are dead. It's believable to me that Dean's mind just didn't make the connection from "This is the past" to "Castiel and the other angels are still alive". Not with so much going on. The idea to send Sam a message was triggered by the letters. Otherwise Dean would not have thought of that that either.
I do agree with you about the state of Heaven, though. It's hard to believe that with Raphael and Castiel (and even Rachel) gone it's so quiet up there.
I can imagine Dean not bothering due to his mental state - depressed as fuck and not caring about life in general.
Note his letter to Sam didn't ask his brother to find a way to save him, it said 'take care Sam,' like Dean had resigned himself to living out his days in the past, or even made a decision to do so in order to escape the pain and responsibility of the future.
I WAS somewhat miffed, however, that SAM didn't bother trying to contact an angel to try and get Dean back. As far as we know, he and Dean still think Balthazar is alive, so you'd think Sam would have given that a shot, since Bal has helped them in the past.
I gonna assume he attempted off screen without success...

"The angels are too much of a deus ex machina so what can we do?"
"Hmmmm let's just completely ignore them and the fact that they've been around for 3 seasons now. Nobody will notice."
