Love the first line. I love stories that start like that; straight in with a scene-setting few words that say so much without even trying, somehow :)

the blessing & the curse
of not having it all under control

Nice.

Mulder figured it was about time
that he & Scully got to shrug off the weight of the world as well

Love that up until this point it is ambiguous as to whether you are describing the movie or Scully/them - that this is a metaphor for them.

One for the night
their unborn dream died.

Love the one, two, three.. in this section.

"If all our choices led to this very moment,
then I believe we are precisely where we are supposed to be.
I told you once, a long time ago, that I would do it all over again.
I still would."

LOVE.

No butter, though -- that was disappointing,
but comforting in its predictability.

Ha!

Love the two-shits about a gopher line - love the humour in this :)

Once upon a time ( ... )

Thank you so much for your comment -- your ongoing support has really helped to keep me writing over the past few years.

And hee, I kinda laughed myself while writing the gopher line, so I'm glad it worked for you as well.

Originally I'd been planning on including Scully's POV in this as well, but then I realized it really was Mulder's voice I was hearing for this piece. The humor kind of went along with that. I've always loved that side of him too.

Beautiful. If it comes out in free verse then go with it, trust your instincts and as you say don't overthink it.

I haven't watched X-files in a long time but this captures it so perfectly I'm right back with it.

I'm so glad you liked it. I actually haven't watched much XF in a long time either, ha. It seems they're permanently implanted in my brain, kinda like an alien chip. Hmm...
