I have very little to report as I arrived late - very late - two hours late last night, my flight having been delayed in Tokyo. If I'd known the flight would be delayed, I would not have eaten the disgusting pizza served by American Airlines and instead gotten some ramen at the airport in Tokyo ( Read more... )

Your recollection of Broca's Area is correct.

I look forward to further trip reports. One of these days I need to go somewhere other than North America and Europe...

Er. Well. That's the pop sci understanding, anyway, which is fine except that it's badly wrong :)

Broca's aphasia is a severe impairment of language *production*. Not comprehension, and not necessarily communication, as shown by Chuck Goodwin (whose father, though severely aphasic, communicated with subtlety and clarity with people who knew him, knew he wasn't stupid, and had some shared context to work from).

Broca's area is the brain bit they thought was responsible for language production, cause it was the bit shared by both the patients Broca looked at (who had Broca's aphasia; and one of them had some sort of degenerative dementia too and half his brain was gone). Thus, commonly considered an area regulating language, yes ( ... )

man I wish my name was "Manija Broca" instead of "John"... hmm, maybe that'll be my new year's eve announcement, a new name. ha!
