Best NEW unlicensed manga, manhwa, and manhua

What are your favorite manga, manhwa, manhua, and other Asian comics that a) have not yet been licensed in English, b) were created within the last ten years or so?

Other than Yokohama KK mumble, which is delightful and which I am already reading, and Yoshinaga Fumi's Ooku, which I already know about... and would really appreciate scanlation ( Read more... )

I read very few scanslations that I'm not already reading in licensed form, but one that I've read a bit of and really, really want to be licensed is Shin Angyo Onshi.

My tag from the little bit I read last year: http://meganbmoore.livejournal.com/tag/shin+angyo+onshi

(though the tag will likely soon change to manga:+shin+angyo+onshi)

It's like someone decided that the Chun Hyang legend sucked because the hero left the heroine there while he went off to become an official and THEN saved her, and she sat around waiting for him, so they offed him, made her a badass, and sent her off with another badass to reform ancient Korea. And added bondage issues. (This is all the first few chapters.)

You beat me to it :) (please note you may recognize him?/her? as the creator of Let's Bible)

Actually, I'm not sure what Let's Bible is...

Oh, you must have missed the posting on S_D a couple of months ago, where the crackiness of it all was succinctly summed up as "Sacrilicious!". Unfortunately, most of the image links there have been replaced with the Yellow Frog of Doom, but InventorSpot has enough scans and description to give you a bit of an idea of what you missed...

Make sure to specifically ask octopedingenue if she doesn't come by here and drop a ton of links at you. XD She's got a LOT of input about this. :D

I've always sort of assumed all the manga-ka in Asia are part of a vast conspiracy; whenever one of them starts publishing a manga which would be remotely appealing to octopedingenue, they e-mail sample jpegs to her so that she will writhe in frustration over all the amazing comics she can't read. It would explain both how she remains so current with not only unlicensed, but also unscanslated manga, despite not living in Japan or as far as I know, being able to read Japanese, and also her abiding and energetic frustration with regards to the untranslated awesomeness.

My theory is that she has a computer chip in her brain that gives her access to all the comics in Asia as they are printed, and that's how she stays so up-to-date.

Well, if I can vote for something that was briefly licensed and then dropped on the floor...Ginga Densetsu Weed. Ran from 1999 to 2007, it's the sequel to a beloved 1980s series by an insane mangaka who seems to do almost nothing but series focused on dogs. But I don't mean fluffy pet-lover stuff like Inubaka -- these are your basic sort of multi-ethnic sprawling-cast bloodily violent "I must get stronger so I can live up to the example of my father's fighting spirit!" sort of action-heavy shonen series...only all the characters are dogs ( ... )

Can I put in a vote for a manhwa? I really like They, Too, Love by Seo Moon Da Mi. It's a slice-of-life shojo series about four members of a biology club. The male lead grows vegetables in the lab and cooks over Bunsen burners, while the female lead tells very depressing fortunes with her tarot cards. Apparently it's on hiatus in Korea though, which does not bode well for its licensing chances. (link)

Yes, thanks! That sounds adorable.

My bad, let me edit the post to include "manhwa or manhua or other Asian comics."

I did a brief write-up of They, Too, Love in my year in review post.

I also like Gokusen, which is mentioned below, though not to the same degree.

Okay, the first one I can think of off the top of my head is Gokusen, I can go into more detail or provide links once I'm home for the evening. Most of the other unlicensed stuff I read is pretty much pure crack.

Also, my poor untranslated (and pretty!) Bleach doujinshi begs you to not outbid me on that particular scanlation offer...
