Louis L'Amour: Ride the River

The library at the ashram where I grew up had a bunch of Louis L'Amour westerns. My recollection was that they were rather better than one might expect, but I didn't read any as an adult until I wanted to get a feel for the archetypal western, and recalled a scene in one in which a woman kills a thug by stabbing him with a tree branch. I remember that one. The reticule with the weight at the bottom very much impressed me in early years as a useful sort of weapon to have.

When I was about ten, I spent a three-week vacation in FL reading dozens of L'Amours. I loved them at the time but now have absolutely no recollection of any of them. Looks like a trip down Amnesia Lane* is in order.

*Runs parallel to Memory Lane, and is known for it's prodigous amounts of deja vu.

That's the thing I like about the Louis L'Amour's - they're always satisfying, and frequently surprising in their refusal to follow gender or even genre stereotyping.

Hah! I'm pretty sure I would have remembered that one, and there was a point where I burned through a lot of L'Amours. I did love the way there were always more Sacketts, and they all looked out for one another. Don't mess with the Sacketts, people! They will mess your shit up!
