Whatever happened with the X-Files?

I have been greatly amused by the meme of describing one's relationships to one's fandoms as if they were relationships to people. I have been particularly struck by how many people had a really bad relationship with The X-Files, generally described like this:

"When I first met you, there was no one else like you. You were smart and stylish and exciting, and I met tons of cool people because of you. It was so good for so long, but then you completely changed. Love turned to hate, you stole my VCR, I locked a haddock in your security deposit box, and we ended up hiring lawyers to say terrible things about each other. I'm still so bitter about the whole thing that I leave the room if I ever hear your name."

I had a different experience: I drifted away slowly, I think during the sixth season (around "Post-Modern Prometheus," the episode where Mulder repeats a bank robbery day, the baseball alien episode, etc.) The show and I just seemed to be going out of sync with what had made me love it in the first place. So I had stopped watching long before whatever led to everyone else's terrible break-up.

So: what the heck happened? Why are you all so mad? And what are the magic bubbles?

Enormous series spoilers in comments, of course.
