Note: After the conclusion of the Soul Society arc, the anime departs from the manga. My guess is that the anime got ahead of the manga and/or the anime creators realized that with the remaining anime episodes would not be enough to bring the rest of the manga story to a close.

Bleach also has fairly overt yuri overtones (between Orihime and her best friend-- the shonen conventional "I will protect you!" is big here-- and between (I don't want to spoil, not sure how far you are) two shinigami who have a big fight later. This is also bigger in the manga.

I find the women on the series (besides Rukia in the Soul Society arc-- an annoying reversion) to be subversive to type, particularly Orihime.

Yes, those are definitely atypical shounen elements, and I wish more had been made of them, dammit.

I'm up to volume 15 or thereabouts. I posted a spoilery-for-Soul-Society post right before this one.

Rukia vs. the evil juice box

When I started packing these in my lunches recently, I had a terrible time getting the straw out of the wrapper at first. I used to struggle and swear and rip at the plastic, and finally refer to it as my daily "Bleach moment".
