I understand that MZB did very little of the cowriting for the Margot Alton books.

....oh man. True that.

Heh, you should write it, I'm curious. (Although it's kinda black market, eh?)

OTOH, the few books that DO have a Terran career woman (the same woman) on Darkover are pretty good. Well, two of them: The Shattered Chain and Thendara House -- for City of Sourcery is, well, pretty bad.

And, yes, there's consequences for Sharra in later books: Heritage of Hastur and Sharra's Exile.

Star of Danger is such a boys' own adventure novel. Only I mostly thinking boys' adventures are boring and Star of Danger is fun.

When it comes out, we need to make sure you get a copy of Secret of the Three Treasures.

oh hey, I used to be a total Darkover fanatic...

I always enjoyed "The Spell Sword", because it was nice uncomplicated fairy-tale stuff. With spacemen. But Star of Danger was cool too.

The Bloody Sun, on the other hand, is sprawling angsty joy. Or, anyway, was when I was 17. ;) I've still got it hanging around here somewhere, I think... but my true love was for "The Heritage of Hastur". Which is The Uber-Angst. And slashy!

I was a long time Darkover fan freak (at a way to early age for my own good).

Star of Danger was specifically written as a YA book, and if I remember right, had to do with MZB changing publishers.

Slash and incest themes are common throughout the Darkover series. My favorites are the strong women ones - Hawkmistress and The Shattered Chain.
