Oh, trust me, despite all the "do not feed the deer" signs, I think it got fed quite a bit.

They looooove to eat roses, all the way to the ground. Gardening in deer country (which includes the East side of the SF Bay Area) requires the money for 12 foot high fences or motion detectors attached to sprinkler heads. Though that seems to be failing now, I think these have gotten used to it. There are other stuff you can try, but different herds have different tastes and different fears, or they're just f**kin' with us.

Oh, I used to live in solid deer country. In spite of this, I still think they're adorable.

Are they SIka deer? they remind me of those we saw at Nara that were considered sacred/divine messengers/National Treasures. You could buy deer cookies to feed them and they weren't shy about nudging people for them.

Lovely pictures! Miyajima was one of those places we wanted to visit, but never made it there.

Yes, I think they're the same kind of deer as the ones in Nara.

I received many warnings about the deer of Nara, including that they had eaten someone's JR Pass out of his pocket.

Eee! I could well believe it. There were signs about warning how physical they could get (I especially remember a graphic of a deer-head butting grandma, cane and all!)

I particularly liked the fog and the floating shrine.

For some reason, my brain persisted in interpreting the legs and shadows of the benches on the approach to the floating shrine as coatimundi prowling around.
