It took me 124 pages to become so annoyed that I decided to live-blog this book. Given that it is written by a hippie named Richard Alpert who changed his name to Ram Dass after becoming the follower of a guru named Maharajji, my annoyance was quite predictable ( Read more... )

I feel really sheepish saying this -- and I'm sure it's probably pronounced differently -- but I can't help reading his name as one that Bart Simpson would phone up Moe with. "Can I get a Ram Dass? Anyone wanna give me a Ram Dass? ALL I WANT IS RAM DASS, YOU GUYS."

the recognition that some wrongs are unforgivable, and that victims don't need to forgive perpetrators, can also be very healing.

I like your philosophy a whole lot better than his. Victims have a right to their own feelings, have a right to work through the issue at their own pace. They might seek to _understand_ without forgiving, and that, too, is a legitimate choice.. but it's theirs.

Why is it that writers who claim to be all accepting and kindly are so condescending and judgmental?

Also, that bit where he talks about Alzheimer's is icky and victim-blaming, and sounds exactly like when people go on about how depressed people, for example, don't need medication and are just lazy/brainwashed by those eeeevil western doctors.
