Life in a combat zone:

After 2 months I finally had a reason to get off Camp KAIA and visit ISAF headquarters in downtown Kabul. Nobody leaves without a reason. I have been longing to see something new. It makes me wonder how anyone can survive years in prison, noplace new to go, nothing new to look at. There's a small park at ISAF HQ, full of ( Read more... )

I hear you.

When I lived in California and Arizona, there were no squirrels. None. Zip. Nada. I didn't realize how much I adore the furry little rodents until I couldn't see them play. First time I saw squirrels after I moved back to Kansas, I bawled like a baby. Weird.

Of course, now you understand the appeal of tree huggers. Teehee!!

But cool that the Lt. is a scifi fan!

Hope all is going well for you!

It is sad to live in a place with no greenery. Besides the lack of greenery, there is the dust, the clouds of dust everywhere, and the polluted water and air. Every day I am grateful to realize that I get to leave this place.

Yes, the Marine Corps LT (prounounced "EL TEE") is a great guy to work with. One evening all us oldsters were fiercely debating which rock band was the greatest, AC/DC or Led Zeppelin, and the LT suggested some modern band and we all heaped scorn upon him. He took it well LOL.

Oh, it was lovely. When I leave here I want to visit a botanical garden. I should get home in May 2013, which means it will be spring!

Both images are impressive.
We didn't have rain for well over a year here and then we had a small shower early this year. People were standing out in the rain just letting it hit their faces. It was glorious. I still, months later, will walk out in the rain. You never know how precious something is until it is taken away.

oh my god, yes. After 2 months here it rained one day and the LT and I ran outside and stood in the rain. I can't imagine no rain for over a year, where do you live? Truly I never really appreciated the greenery of the East Coast until now.

I live in Texas. Our little area went without any significant (or otherwise) rain for about 16 months straight. It was horrible. We were hit with fires, crop failures, and a lot of cattle sell-outs. Agriculture around here was devastated.

That sounds terrible. I'm sorry you and your community had to go through that.
