Disappointing. Too old, and the fact the decision seems to be based on getting a bigger-name star for Peeta seems kind of pointless when the younger actors in Harry Potter and Twilight weren't exactly big names.
Seems to be a lot of disappointment, given that this week's EW had a poll on who should be Katniss and it was Steinfeld by a landslide.
If this means they can actually afford to get an R rating, something I'm seriously confused as to how they could manage to do this faithfully without, then I guess there's an upside.
What is the difference between Hailee Steinfeld and Jennifer Lawrence? Both actresses are talented, came out of nowhere and were nominated for Oscars this year.
Oh, I see, one is fair-skinned and blonde and the other ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE THE CHARACTER.
Oh gosh, for like a host of factors. Child labor laws resulting in reduced hours, having to provide academic tutors on set, being able to hire an older Peeta (yecch), being able to market the film as a tentpole movie instead of a teen movie, etc.
Which, okay, if you want to hire someone older than Steinfeld, that's fine, but at least make a good-faith attempt to allow actors of color a fair and equal chance for this role. They do exist. Don't explicitly only declare you only want Caucasian actors--many of whom don't even meet the physical characteristics of the character--to audition.
okay this could be ... a lot worse. she did work it in Winter's Bone, and she's hasn't even accepted the offer yet, so. they might end up going with someone who better looks the part anyway, but even if they don't at least we know she can actually act.
I don't want to insult you, but this is what grates my nerves so much about the fight to actually have POC on Hollywood.
Who cares if she can act? It is irrelevant to the fact that Hollywood is constantly grabbing up people who look like her in the mistaken assumption that they are more marketable than darker-skinned people.
It annoys me that "at least they can act", has sort of become some ridiculous mantra that covers up the real issues.
For me, it's not an issue of "could be a lot worse" if she is hired, it actually, is worse because Hollywood. can. do. better. than. this.
Race is not specifically expressed in the books, however I assumed it was common knowledge that Katniss is supposed to represent a mixing of classes/races one that is associated with whiteness and one that is associated with blackness.
I assumed that Katniss, based on description and phenotype alone (illustrations from the book and character descriptions) was more akin to a mixed race POC more akin to Hailee Steinfeld than Jennifer Lawrence.
I feel like you're trolling me or something because I thought this was fairly obvious.
I think Hailee Steinfeld, who looks just like the character in the novel should get the role. What gets me the most is that Hailee Steinfeld and Jennifer Lawrence have the exact same stock -- new, young actresses both nominated for an Oscar.
Playing devil's advocate for the production, the way I see it Lawrence has two brownie points over Steinfeld. One is age, which has a great influence over employment laws; hiring a 18+ actor will save the production more money. The other is that Lawrence is actually from Appalachia and Steinfeld is from Los Angeles, and that may have influenced the casting if the production valued Appalachia more than having a mixed-race Katniss. However, I will be extremely disappointed if Katniss pops up speaking without an Appalachian accent, if that is the case.
Even so, it doesn't excuse the fact that their "open" casting call was not open to PoC at all.
