Walk on Hollywood: Challenging Whitewashing and Yellowface in the Film Industry

May 25, 2010 22:11

Hi everyone! I'm not sure if this is allowed here at all (mods, please feel free to delete this if it is), but I wanted to make a report on a project I wanted to do for one of my university classes. Last Saturday, a day before the L.A. Times article released, I decided to paint signs just outside of the Grauman's Chinese Theatre (Hollywood Blvd) ( Read more... )

This is so ridiculously awesome. I wish I'd thought about doing that the last time I was in LA and at the Graumann theater about a year ago.

Thanks for doing this!

You are an awesome person. I wish I could whip out your photo anytime somebody makes a scathing comment about how only white, privileged college kids care about this.

Thanks! Haha, well, if it ever comes down to it, feel free to do so! It never hurts to inform properly =)

"... only white, privileged college kids care about this."

People have actually said that? I thought that kind of person generally doesn't care. People generally say that we're all just whiny Asians (LOL!).

...those were some very unprofessional cops. Is there any way you could official report their behavior?

It's wonderful to see that so many people are genuinely concerned if they get the chance to be informed.

Hearing that is an antidote to the attitude at places like avatar_fans. No matter what they say, it's not time for us to "shut up already", because there are still people who are underinformed and informing them does get them to agree that it's not right.

If she got their names, she could most definitely speak to someone at the police department about their behavior and file a complaint. They really had no right to tell her to move. :\

Anyway, AWESOME that you did this! :D And that you went back later anyway despite what the cops said, haha.

I talked to a lot of people about it afterward, including a couple people who followed me out, and that's exactly what they said (about being unprofessional). We just concluded that they either didn't know what they were talking about, or--according to a couple of criminology majors that I know--they were using my supposed ignorance of the law to their advantage.

Thinking back on it, it might have been the fact that I was making a sign that sort of put us in the grey area between protesting and loitering. Then again, if I was more assertive about it being a protest (I swear, I don't think they heard me when I said that), then they might have let me go. They were a bit intimidating, and I wanted to do this as peacefully as possible without starting too much trouble.

Wow, this is incredible! I love how you made the painting of the signs almost like performance art (appropriate for LA XD) but it was also subtle awareness-spreading informative performance art! Absolutely fantastic and so inspiring.

You're like a one-person flash(card) mob. \o/

Aww, thank you! I really wondered if someone would be able to catch onto why I was painting signs specifically, and you hit it spot on =) I was particularly inspired by Shirage Kasuo, Shigeko Kubota, Barbra Kruger, and especially Valie Export.

Damn, one of the people from avatar_fans showed up here to troll. Could you take care of it?
