Evan thinks his door open and pauses in removing his boots. “Hey, Doc. What’s up?”

David is leaning against Evan’s door jam. “Hey, are you…” his voice drifts off as he notices Evan’s state of casual undress: his black t-shirt with his uniform pants, and one shoe off and the other about to join it. “You’re in for the night?”

“Yup,” Evan confirms. “Colonel Sheppard wants to meet early tomorrow to go over the duty roster for next week, so I figured I’d turn in early. Why? Did you need something?”

“I…” David drifts off and looks away from him.

Evan stands up and walks across the room to where David is standing, shifting from foot to foot. “Hey,” he says quietly, reaching out and brushing a hand against David’s elbow. “What’s up, David?”

David turns his head back to Evan’s and their eyes meet for a split second, nothing longer, because they’ve talked about this. They have. And they decided that they’d rather remain just friends so that they could remain teammates. Because even though Colonel Sheppard isn’t the strictest commander that Evan’s been under, he’s pretty sure he’d have a problem with Evan and David staying on the same team if they became lovers.

David visibly swallows and his eyes are moving all over the room, and he’s doing anything to avoid looking at Evan. Evan can tell now that something’s wrong, David’s not usually this jumpy, and he’s not usually standing in Evan’s doorway looking like he wants to ask if he can come in.

“Is everything alright?” Evan asks.

David fiddles with the sleeve of his jacket as he answers, “My dad…” he swallows again. “My dad died.”

Oh shit, Evan thinks. Because he knows how much David’s family means to him. He knows how much David idolizes his father, how close they were. Evan thinks he knows more about David’s family than he does even his own.

He reached out without hesitating and pulls David into a tight hug, wrapping his arms firmly around David’s body. David clings to him and buries his nose into Evan’s neck, and Evan’s too polite to say anything about the soft trembles that are making their way through David.

Evans walks back a few steps, bringing David with him, so that the door will close and their embrace won’t be privy to the whole base. He runs his hands up and down David’s back and even though David is so sad right now, Evan can’t help but think that this might be as much as he’ll ever get. So he memorizes David. He commits his smell to memory, the way his body feels under his hands.

The way they fit perfectly together.

“Evan,” David whispers, and Evan can hear nothing but pain in his voice. “Please, don’t turn me away. I just need… just tonight, please.”

And Evan finds himself nodding and agreeing, because he can’t say no to David, he never could. “Of course,” Evan promises. He pulls back and lets his lips ghost against David’s temple.

David’s eyes are sad and filled with tears when they meet Evan’s this time. They’re full of loss and pain and so many things that make Evan wish that David were his so he would have the right to try and take them away.

They strip down to their boxers and shirts in silence and Evan can’t help the way his eyes roam David’s features, hungrily, knowing he’ll never get this chance again.

Evan slips into bed and holds the blanket up for David to slide in beside him. Evan thinks the lights off and David curls up around him, an arm going around Evan’s waist, with David’s head pillowing Evan’s chest. David is warm and Evan feels each exhale that David makes through his shirt.

I could have this, Evan thinks. It’s so close. David would say yes, and they could learn to be on different gate teams.

He cards a hand through David’s soft hair and hears a soft hiccup and unexplainable warmth right where David’s head is. And then he realizes that David is crying. That tears are soaking through his shirt. But his mind is stuck on the fact that David is crying. Evan thinks this is what it must feel like to have your heart break.

He keeps running his fingers through David’s hair, while his other hand seeks out David’s. Their fingers curl automatically around each other’s and Evan tries not to think about what it means that everything about them together is just so perfect.

Except that David is still crying.

Eventually the sobs taper off and David’s breathing begins to slow.

“Thank you, Evan,” David whispers.

“I love you,” is what Evan says in reply before he can stop himself. He closes his eyes and waits for David’s quiet rebuke. But it never comes.

Instead David says, “I know. I love you, too.”

“Goodnight, David.”

“Goodnight, Evan,” David answers.

Evan wants to talk more, wants to know what David means when he says he loves Evan. But it’s late, and David is already so worn out that Evan’s not going to get him up in the morning to go running with him like he normally does. And he’s going to tell Coughlin and Reed to leave David alone for the day, instead of letting them try to talk him into more self-defense techniques. He’ll save the conversation for another time. Maybe when David’s back from Earth, back from burying his father. It’s kept for years, it will keep for a few more days.

In the morning, during their meeting, Evan will talk to John about maybe switching scientists with SGA-4. It was stupid to think that just because they aren’t lovers yet, that Evan would treat David the same as everybody else. He’s loved him for years, and has done stupid things more than once because of that.

For now, though, Evan can be this. He can be here for David, letting him steal his heart and his blanket. Although, his heart has been David’s for a while now, but the blanket thing is new, and Evan finds himself looking forward to cold nights if it means David will be with him.

“I love you,” Evan says again, into the pitch black.

David snuggles in a little closer and mumbles, “Love you, too, Ev.”

And suddenly a day that had no previous meaning, no special place in Evan’s heart, becomes the best day of his life. Evan tucks the date away next to a file labeled ‘David loves strawberries on his pancakes’.

He feels a little bad about the smile that is stretching its way across his face, when David’s dad has just died. And Evan thinks that in the future, he should probably pick another day as their anniversary, so as not to coincide with one of the worst days in David’s life. Yet, he can’t help it. He’s happy, and cold, and here with David and that’s all he has wanted for years.

“I love you,” Evan says a third time. Just because he can. He isn’t sure that he’ll ever be able to stop.

“I love you,” David murmurs.

“I’m sorry about your dad, David,” Evan offers gently.

“Evan?” David queries softly. “I have something to confess.”

Evan furrows his brow as he thinks about what it is David might say. Most involve not really loving him. He swallows, “Yeah?”

“My dad didn’t stay dead.”

“What?” Evan asks, because this is starting to sound like a bad sci-fi movie.

“He died, but they were able to resuscitate him,” David tells him. “I just… it’s hard to think that he might have really died and I would have been here.”

“So you’re not going back to Earth for his funeral?” Evan asks dumbly. He blinks as he tries to process everything. David is staying and they could have the conversation in the morning.

“No,” David answers. “But I do want to go back soon, just to see my family.” He pauses. “I want them to meet you.”

Evan thinks he really will have to talk to John about switching up the teams as he answers, “I’d love to meet them.”

“I almost lost him,” David whispers solemnly.

“You didn’t, though,” Evan says, even though he knows that’s never enough. But he also knows that if he starts counting his losses by the almosts, he would be down more than he could ever make up.

“I know.”

“I love you, David,” Evan says again.

“How long are you going to keep saying that?” David asks. Evan can hear the amusement and the warmth in the question.

“Forever,” he answers simply.

“Just wait until you see how many plants I plan to move in here with us,” Davids responds cheekily. “You might change your tune, then.”

“I knew from the start you were a love me, love my plants kind of guy,” Evan says. “Besides, there’s a nice two room suite I’ve been eyeing in Zelenka’s section. That way, all of your plants could have their own room.”

“Hmm,” David muses. “So they could.”

“And there’s plenty of windows for sunlight,” Evan adds.

“I love how you’ve thought of everything.”

“It is my job, you know,” Evan tells him. “Sometimes I think John expects me to make bullets out of thin air.”

“You call him John?”

“Only in private.”

“Oh.”

“Why?” Evan asks.

“I’ve just never heard you refer to him so casually before.”

Evan twirls some of David’s hair around his finger. “We spend about eight hours a day together, about four days a week. He got tired of me always calling him Colonel or sir.”

“I suppose that makes sense,” David allows.

“I love you,” Evan says for the fifth time that night.

“I won’t disappear if you stop saying that,” David says. “And, I love you, too.”

David’s hand flitters up and a finger brushes over Evan’s nipples. Evan lets out a soft hiss and David does it again. “David…”

“How long do we have to wait to get to the sex?” David asks.

“A week?” Evan guesses.

David slides a hand up the inside of Evan’s shirt, and it leaves a trail of fire on Evan’s skin. “A week?” David repeats.

“A few days?” Evan offers weakly.

David gently squeezes Evan’s nipple and Evan is pretty sure that his estimate is about to be lowered. A lot. “It’s been years,” David says. “I’m not wasting anymore time.”

David rolls onto him and Evan’s brain is stuck on this is really going to happen. When he’s a little more coherent, he realizes that David has already removed both of their shirts. Suddenly Evan feels bad that all of his expensive military stealth training has gone out the window.

There’s a tug on his boxers and Evan raises the lights just a little, enough to make out David’s figure moving down his body. His boxers are maneuvered off of him and the cold air makes Evan’s cock jump just a little before David takes it in his mouth, heating it up instantly.

“Oh, shit,” Evan swears. “David.”

David doesn’t answer, can’t answer, because his mouth is full with Evan’s thick erection, and his tongue is swirling around it like David was born to suck cock. Evan digs his fingers into the sheets and David’s throat suddenly relaxes and Evan slides in just a little bit more.

It feels so good.

Evan’s been in love with David for years, and although he wasn’t a saint during that time, it’s been a while since someone’s blown him. Especially someone as good at it as David apparently is.

With David’s mouth wrapped around him, Evan manages to lose all sense of space and time. That is until a slicked finger slowly presses into him. Evan isn’t sure where David got the lube from, and doesn’t really care, because soon enough, he’s letting his legs fall open. David’s head bobs up and down Evan’s erection while two fingers begin to slowly stretch him.

This Evan hasn’t done since before Atlantis. He’d always been more of a top than a bottom, the last time he bottomed being somewhere around his college days. But if this is what David wants to do, then Evan’s fine with that. He’s fine with anything as long as it’s David.

Finally, David pulls his head up, and Evan’s slippery cock falls from his mouth. “You taste amazing,” David tells him. His fingers twist inside of Evan some more and Evan doesn’t try to hide a wince. “You’re really tight, Evan.”

“It’s been a while since I’ve been on the bottom,” Evan admits.

David pauses at that and looks up at him. “You’re a top?” There is a bit of surprise coloring his voice, and a little bit of something else--what it is, Evan can’t tell.

“For the most part, yeah.”

“I--wow,” David says, like he’s discovered a state secret, and not like he has two fingers in Evan. “Would you prefer to…?” He lets the question hang.

Evan shakes his head. “This is fine.” Better than fine, Evan thinks.

David slowly sinks a third finger into him and Evan’s forcing his body to relax, to accept the invasion. David gives him a moment, before he begins to slowly fuck Evan with his fingers. “God, you feel really great, Evan. Why did we wait so long to do this?”

If he’s asking a legitimate question, while Evan’s a few heartbeats away from orgasm, then Evan’s not sure of what it is. “Mmm,” he sighs. “Just a little bit over…” David’s fingers change angles and Evan jumps when they hit the right spot. “Right there,” he moans.

David’s free hand comes up and squeezes the base of Evan’s cock. It’s not painful, not really, but it’s certainly not what Evan wishes David would be doing. “Don’t come yet,” David says softly.

“Then you better hurry up,” Evan says.

David nods and pulls his fingers out of Evan and then there’s some maneuvering of their bodies and David is on top of him with Evan’s legs around his waist. “Ready?” David asks, lining himself up with Evan’s hole.

Evan wraps one of his hands around David’s wrist, where his arms are braced on the bed. “Go slow?” Evan asks.

David leans down and kisses him. And Evan realizes that they almost had sex without ever kissing. He greedily kisses David back and it feels better than it did when Evan first got to fly a Lockheed AC-130 attack aircraft. Then David’s tongue is slipping it’s way into his mouth and Evan gently sucks on it.

Kissing David is so much better than he had ever thought it would be that Evan wonders how far off his estimations on everything else in his life are.

When they pull back, Evan is out of breath and he’s panting hard. David uses that moment to slowly push in.

“Evan,” David says gently. “Just relax.” He leans down and presses a kiss to Evan’s forehead, letting his lips linger. “Take a deep breath.”

Evan tries, but his heart is still beating too fast, and his lungs demanding too much air. David waits, though, until Evan can do it.

“Now slowly exhale,” David orders.

While Evan exhales, David slides in another inch. Evan has forgotten the pain that comes with being on the bottom, and he’s forgotten how exposed it would leave him feeling. “David,” Evan says. “David.”

“I’m right here,” David promises. “Take another deep breath, Evan.”

So Evan does and when he exhales again, David slides the rest of the way in and Evan is feeling full, along with so many other things. David doesn’t move, instead he lets Evan take his time to adjust to the feeling. The pain slowly begins to recede and all Evan is left with is the knowledge that David is inside of him.

Evan makes a noise in the back of his throat that David takes to mean he’s ready. David begins to thrust in and out of him, slowly at first, letting Evan adjust to the sensation. Then he picks up speed and it feels so amazing because it’s David.

“Evan,” David whispers. “I love you. I love you.”

“I love you, David,” Evan says in return.

Evan works a hand in between them and wraps it around his erection. He begins to move his hand up and down as David thrusts in and out of him. He’s not sure if David is close or not, but he knows that he is.

David makes a small grunt, and thrusts, and then he’s shaking above Evan, and unlike earlier that night, it’s not from crying. Evan’s name spills from David’s lips as he comes. Evan lets himself follow David over the edge and he comes all over his stomach.

“God, Evan,” David breathes. “You’re fucking gorgeous when you come.”

Evan doesn’t stop the smile from spreading across his face. “You’re not so bad yourself.”

David grins and pulls out. Evan sighs in relief as David collapses next to him on the bed. David reaches out and runs his fingers through Evan’s sweaty locks. “So you’re really a top?”

“I think I’ve just converted,” Evan jokes.

David smiles kindly, but pushes him to answer. “Really, Ev?”

“Yes, really,” Evan says. “I haven’t bottomed since college.”

“Did you bottom a lot before that?”

Evan can’t help but wonder why David is so interested in this right now when all Evan wants to do is sleep. “Not a lot, just more. I guess like sixty percent of the time.”

“That’s quite a turn around,” David muses.

Evan shrugs. “People change.” He leans over and gives David a kiss. “Sleep now.” He glances at his clock. “I have to meet Colonel Sheppard in six hours and seem somewhat coherent.”

“We’ll talk about this later?” David asks.

“Yes,” Evan says sleepily. “Later. For now, sleep.”

“I love you, Evan.”

“I love you, too, David.” He licks his lips. “And I’m glad you’re dad didn’t stay dead.”

“Me, too,” David answers with a yawn. “But I’ll have to thank him for dying, since that’s what it took for us to get here.”

“Are there Thank You For Dying cards?”

“We’ll have to make one. And send a get-well-soon plant.”

“In the morning,” Evan mumbles, already falling into sleep.

“The card could rhyme,” David suggests. “Dear dad, Thank you so much for dying, hope all your plants are thriving, you got me together with Evan, and I’m glad you avoided Heaven.”

Evan waited a beat before he asks, “Isn’t your dad a Harry Potter fan?”

“Don’t remind me,” David groans.

“How about that second line goes: Your death brought me and Evan together, glad you didn’t head off on your next great adventure.”

“You are such a nerd,” David sniggered.

“It’s better than rhyming Evan and Heaven,” he defends.

“Uh-huh.”

“Go to sleep, Parrish,” Evan says, flicking David’s arm.

“Yes, sir! Major Lorne, sir!” David says cheekily.

“I’m going to regret this, aren’t I?” Evan asks, even though he knows he never will.

“Every day for the rest of our lives,” David confirms.

Evan decides, “I can live with that.”

“Good, because I wasn’t really giving you an option.” David kisses him then, and it’s soft and sweet and full of promises. “I love you, Evan.”

“I love you, David,” he says, and Evan has the distinct feeling of knowing that this is the best thing that’s ever happened to him. Well, second best, he amends. The best thing would be meeting David Parrish. Because Evan knows that there is no topping that.

Ever.
