But isn't that sort of one of the points of the movie? Now, before I continue - I have not yet seen it. From what I've read, this supposed to be a stylized 1980's -1990's video game world parody, right? Sexism wouldn't be just a coincidental element from bad/lazy writing or screenwriter bias, it would be expected and exaggerated, in the vein of Double Dragon, Bad Dudes, Kung Fu, and other cheesy Nintendo/Sega action games. They guy HAS to save the day and win it for the girl.
I agree that the movie is stunning, but I had intellectual problems with it that differ from yours.
1. Scott Pilgrim is a tool. He's not all that nice. For that fact, neither is Ramona. . . especially in light of the awesomeness of both Knives and even Kim the drummer. It is hard to be too sympathetic when the main character is a tool and the main romantic interest is. . . well, she has nice hair.
2. Self-respect trumps love, eh? I would have flipped the two, for I would argue that it is only when there is self-respect that one can do the proper self-sacrifice that love ought to entail (otherwise love becomes bondage and control. . . which would have tied in very nicely with the point being potentially made with Ramona).
*Note: I would assert that what you are noting isn't sexism so much as a weak character. Besides. . . Knives is the kickass girl who is stronger than them all at the end.
