[song translation] NEVER LAND - Amanogawa no Shita de

Nov 13, 2009 18:53

Third song on the mini album.

Japanese sentence, structure and words are sometimes not translatable into English that makes sense, therefore, I tend to cut here and there or even change the whole sentence to get English interpretation that's good structurally. I'm not a native speaker of English nor that I have mastered Japanese, therefore I might get something wrong or write the incorrect expression.

Corrections and comments are highly appreciated.

天の川の下で
Under the Milky Way
Words/Music: Akihide

ああ 星に誘われて
あなたと眺めていた 真夏の天の川
ああ 濡れていた髪を乾かすのも忘れて
寄り添う空の下

Ah … enticed by the stars
Gazing up with you, looking at the midsummer’s Milky Way
Ah … Forgetting to dry our soaked hair
Cuddling close together under the sky

あの日 ふたりは 同じ 夢を見てた

That day, both of us, were heading towards the same dream

でも 人は幸せも涙さえも慣れてしまう生き物で
永遠を交わした約束さえ 今は失くしてしまった

However, people experience happiness and tears in life
Even after giving promises of forever, now it has become lost

「もう これ以上誰も傷つけたくないから、、、」
綺麗すぎた言葉
今の ふたりは 違う 夢を見てる

“Because more than anyone else, I don't want to hurt you...”
Words that are too beautiful
The current both of us are heading towards different dreams

なぜ 人は優しさも残酷さも抱えているのでしょうか?
どちらかを選ぶんでしまえたなら どれほど楽になれたか
あの時見上げていた天の川は すべて知っていながら
あれほど綺麗な星の空を僕らに見せていたのか

Why people still try to hold on, even if gentle or cruel?
If it’s the person you have chosen,
to what extent can it become comfort?
The Milky Way I gazed upon  while knowing everything
Was it to that extent the beautiful starry sky that was shown to us?

なぜ 人は幸せも涙さえも慣れてしまうのでしょうか
永遠を交わした約束さえ 今では失くしてしまった
あの時見上げていた天の川よ すべてを知っていたのに
あれほど綺麗な星の空を僕らに見せてたの?
そのせいでふたり 悲しみを知った

Why do people experience happiness and tears in life?
Even after exchanging promises of forever, now it has become lost
The Milky Way I gazed up at that time while knowing everything
Was it to that extent, the starry sky that was shown to us?
Because of that oversight, the two of us, came to know this grief

ああ 星に誘われて
独りで眺めている 真夏の天の川

Ah … enticed by the stars
Alone gazing at midsummer’s Milky Way

I can’t get good English for this translation. Japanese has a lot of information that cannot be translated into English without breaking up the sentence to explain one by one、 like「傷つけたくない」 which actually means “don’t want to be potentially being able to hurt”. But even if this makes sense, it sounds ugly in English, so I omitted some parts and it became the way it is on the 8th stanza.

One thing that I find interesting while translating this song is the use of 独り at the last stanza, because the normal hitori is written like this 一人. I searched in several dictionaries, and独り also means alone, but it can also mean unmarried, and the feeling of this word is not alone as in lonely, but has the feeling of independence. Being contented because you are alone and won’t be able to hurt someone you really love? I’m a bit lost. Anyone help me?
