These people - including the people who can't understand why that attitude might be a problem - are cartoonishly self-absorbed. They've never had to think or go hungry a day in their lives. As sad as I am about Prop. 8 passing in California, I am far more saddened and disgusted by Arkansas, which voted to ban unmarried couples from becoming foster or adoptive parents (because of course gay couples fall under that heading).
