The Morning After The early morning sunlight slowly had turned into a mid-afternoon haze, but Sarah and Heather still hadn’t stepped foot off of Heather’s fluffy pink bed. What started as a few quick, innocent kisses had turned into long, passionate embraces that seemed to last for hours. The same two girls who had previously been too shy to change in front of the other girls during gym class now sat in their flowery underpants and discount-store bras with their bare limbs entwined. Too afraid to explore further, they caressed each others supple cheeks, silky hair, graceful necks, never touching each other below the collarbone. Every now and again, the girls would pause to look deeply into each others eyes, which would inevitably bring on fits of uncontrollable laughter.
Sarah and Heather were so engrossed in each other that when Sarah’s cell phone went off mid-morning, Sarah quickly broke away from Heather to silence it, without looking at the caller id, before she brought her lips back to Heather’s. Had she answered it, she would have known that it was her mother calling to see how she was feeling and to tell her that she would pick her up after Teeny’s dance class at 3. It would have come at no surprise, then, when the doorbell suddenly rang.
At that very moment, the girls were locked in a tight embrace, and just beginning to sneak their tentative tongues into each others’ mouths, when the sound of the bell made them freeze in terror.
“Oh my goodness, who is that!?! My parents won’t be back until tomorrow!” cried Heather as she leapt off the bed and began yanking her clothes on. Sarah leaned across the bed and grabbed her cell phone, to see that she had five missed calls, all from her mother.
“Oh shoot, I bet its my mom,” she said as she threw her phone back in her purse with one hand and pulled on her clothes with the other. The bell continued to ring, followed now by a pounding at the door, and the muffled sound of Barb calling Sarah and Heather’s name from outside.
In a matter of seconds, both girls stood fully-clothed in front of each other.
“How do I look?” asked a frightened Sarah.
“Beautiful,” said Heather as she gave Sarah a crooked smile.
“No, I mean, do I look like we were…you know…”
“Oh…no…you look fine. We better answer the door,” said Heather as she turned and walked out of the room in front of Sarah.
Before she made it to the stairs, Sarah grabbed her arm.
“Wait. You know, you can’t say anything about this. To anyone. Ever. Especially to my mom,” pleaded Sarah.
“Or moms,” smirked Heather.
“That isn’t funny, Heather. Just promise me.”
“OK, OK, I promise. We better answer the door before your mom breaks it down.”
