do you have giant slugs down there (leaving that, because of the double entendre!)? my first encounter wit one was at the tacky tourist's mansion, nearly thirty years ago.....on the stairs.
i was headed for the street, when i saw what i thought was a dog turd, on the stair tread. just as i was thinking how rude the dog owner was to have left such a thing behind, it stretched out to crawl away, and i let out a scream, like you would not believe!!!!!!
Banana slugs? Hell yes! Here's a fine specimen I crossed paths with at Point Reyes many years ago (Hope it doesn't make you scream). They're quite harmless, if slimy.
that's him....mikey says they're endangered, as well, and if they die out, the whole planet will be covered in a pile of decaying vegetation, too deep to survive!!!!!
they eat dead plants, the little european slugs eat live ones, and baby banana slugs.
i used to jab all slugs with a fork, and fling the victim at the neighbor's yard. now i place them in a container of dead plant material, hoping the giants prevail!

I once saw one on the sidewalk in Berkeley, or thought I did -- turned out to be a jalapeño!
