This is absolutely lovely, and so heartbreaking and wonderful and just... Oh, Jack. I really love this idea of him watching other people live while he's not living at all, and in a way I feel like it's dark and angsty but also a little hopeful, at least for the people he cares about.
(Also, I think it's cool that I had a rain theme in the story I wrote that started with this line - also, that story took place just after s2 and Gwen feeling very much on the outside of things, so I loved that you channeled that with the end of s3 and Jack feeling very similarly. I don't know if I'd go as far to say that they'd work as companion pieces, but I found some of the similar themes to be very striking.)
I'm so glad you like it! And I totally wanted to go for that glimmer of hope, so I'm glad it came across. I mean, he's gone back so that's got to be a step in the right direction, but it takes time, and so he angsts while he thinks about it. I like to look at the contrast between 'normal' people and Jack.
And hee! That's a really awesome parallel. I had no idea. I love that touch! I actually really liked this piece, which is why I posted it here and not just directly to your journal. It's great you enjoyed it :D
